The Necessity of Beauty

Abstract
Across the centuries, philosophers, poets, scientists, and mathematicians have meditated on the nature and power of beauty. And yet, today there is an increasing marginalization of the pursuit of beauty in art and everyday life. In fact, there is often a radical turn to expel it as if it marks something exclusive and inequitable. Still, anyone who has stepped into a sacred temple, encountered a Renaissance painting, or held an ancient porcelain cup, becomes aware of the value of beauty when it is encountered, seen, felt. After teaching the history of art for more than a decade, I see this occur again and again with my students when they have an experience of the beautiful. In that moment the person becomes witness to something larger than him- or herself, intuiting a completeness or universality in and through the particular object. This paper will explore how beauty opens us to an experience of a transcendent character: to the awareness that we are ourselves created beings, participants in a larger whole. It is in this context that I will explore the necessity of beauty in teaching the humanities, and the visual arts in particular.
