Today, what is the meaning of human beings and why are they so much attracted by the exploration of the outer space? In recent years, that question has been deeply renewed with the discovery of exoplanets and a huge uation of the number of possible planets with geo-atmospheric conditions close to the ones of Earth (a couple of billiards in our own galaxy), the coming of new public and private operators that boost the question of the installations of humans in outer space, the increasing care about the transformations of climate and earth biodiversity – and new possibilities to modify human genome, to tinker hybrids and to build more-than-human AI. All these technologies are usually thought as if what is involved in their making is an 'abstract' human being. But such a person doesn't exist; human beings are deeply embedded in multiple and often divergent cultural traditions. How to think the cultural dimensions of the transformations of the human species? Human sciences and social sciences involved in the understanding of such transformations, the values involved in them, and the risks, hopes and frictions that they bring with them will be called "Cosmo-Humanities". My talk will discuss the guidelines of that emerging field of research in contemporary settings.
