Abstract
Right-wing parties have grown into a strong force in European politics, and in some countries they already have won the majority in national elections. This trend has great implications for the future of the European Union and other forms of transnational governance. Dominic Sachsenmaier’s presentation will firstly reflect upon the historical origins of the new political right in Europe, and it will do so from a combination of local and global perspectives. It will subsequently discuss notions of national culture and European civilization in the rhetoric of Europe’s new right. It will compare them with forms of cultural (national, European and other) identity espoused by the pro- European critics of national chauvinism in Europe. In a final step, the talk will compare the developments in single European countries with the rise of populist movements in other parts ofthe world, including the United States.
