The current human condition may be described as a caravan running in full speed toward a cliff, or even worse, already off the cliff. The crises we face are so serious that we should ask whether humans will or will not have a future, and how is a human future possible. The only hope we have to alter the overall direction of human condition is to become mature soon, as a whole human race, and this has to be done through dialogue of civilizations. By dialogue of civilizations, we do not mean the “jungle model” of confronting each other, fighting for “Myself First,” nor the “zoo model” in which animals are given spaces of peaceful co-existence but no real encounter, nor the “platform model” of allowing each civilization to have a voice to be heard but easily ignored. We mean a“healthcare model,” in which all civilizations engage in diagnosing human conditions and drawing the resources of wisdom together for meeting challenges. The developmental ground that needs to be traversed in order for this to be possible includes realization of the inevitable limitations of each of ourselves, understanding that we become more mature as we are refined, and appreciation of the others we converse and collaborate with as a major source of insight and solutions to the problems we had thought “impossible” in the past. Jointly participated by all, but primarily political leaders, spiritual leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, scholars, and social activists, the dialogue will result in a global governance that is not controlled by “muscles,” but by xin, the “heart-mind,” that joints spirit in the revitalization of life on this very fragile planet.
